The Leadership Team
Steven D Murphy - Unit CoordinatorSteve's first experience with St. John Ambulance was as a young boy. In the late 1970's Steve was swimming with friends in the Welland River when he "got in over his head", literally. A sudden drop off and a strong current pulled Steve beneath the surface, within moments two lifeguards on the St. John Ambulance Water Patrol boat pulled Steve up from the depths and successfully resuscitated him. Steve has accumulated more than 12,500 volunteer hours in his time with St. John Ambulance and in 2006 he was awarded two Life Saving Awards. When he received these awards Steve said to his colleagues "I would gladly volunteer another 12,000 hours for the chance to make a difference in just one person’s life". |
Meghan E Friesen - Assistant Unit Coordinator - Training ServicesMeghan has been a member of St. John Ambulance for more than 6 years. She joined as a youth member and credits her involvement with St. John Ambulance with "keeping her out of mischief" as a teenager. In 2002 Meghan and her partner won first place in the Ontario Open First Aid Competition where she competed against several dozen teams of first responders from across the province. Following her success in patient care competitions Meghan has coached several other teams of first responders with great success.
In Meghan's current capacity as the Training Coordinator she is responsible for ensuring that every Medical First Responder is adequately trained and prepared for the emergency situations that they will face on duty. Meghan strives to ensure that the training that every MFR participates in is as realistic as possible, her philosophy on training is simple "train like you'll treat and you'll treat like you've been trained". Needless to say Meghan is always looking for ways to make training as "realistic" and exciting as possible.
In 2005 Meghan was awarded a Priory Vote of Thanks by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of her dedication to the work of St. John Ambulance. In 2006 Meghan was awarded two Life Saving Awards for her outstanding performance during two separate incidents. |
